Solid Wood Construction Without
Particle Board or Compromise
For this project in Old City Philadelphia, I built these twin
maple cabinets with a striking black-on-black finish to fit the
home’s unique character. The client came to me with a clear
vision, and my job was to bring the technical details to life.
The left-hand unit is a custom over-the-wine-cooler cabinet,
featuring a magnetic door contact switch that automatically
triggers the interior lighting when opened. To the right, its
matching counterpart offers deep lower storage topped with
a 1-1/2-inch solid maple wood tabletop.
I used 1/4-inch inset door glass and 1/2-inch glass shelving
with professional bullnose edging to handle the weight of a
serious collection. The entire interior is illuminated by
integrated high-hat lighting, and we finished the look with
exquisite, polished stainless steel arch handles. Like
everything that leaves my shop, these are built from solid
stick lumber and veneer core—no particle board, just lasting
quality for a beautiful Philadelphia home.
A client in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia came to me with
a specific challenge: she loved the design of her existing
bookcase but needed a twin version on a much larger scale
and in a more figured wood.
After I provided several hardwood samples, she fell in love
with Sapele—a species known for its deep, interlocking grain
and durability. I built these 37"W x 84"H x 11"D units to her
exact specifications, using solid stick lumber and veneer core
to ensure they never sag under the weight of her cherished
collection.
To bring out the natural fire in the wood, I used an amber
wood stain dye that penetrates deep into the Sapele fibers,
making the grain 'pop' under the finish. There is no particle
board here—just honest, high-end cabinetry for a client who
knows the difference. She was thrilled to finally have the
space her library deserved.
When a client comes to my shop with a 20-foot-wide vision,
they aren't looking for a quick fix—they are looking for an
heirloom. This grand, three-piece freestanding library stands
54 inches high and was built to the customer’s exact
specifications using solid Ash wood. To achieve the unique,
pale green-grey hue she envisioned, I applied a specialized
grey stain that highlights the Ash’s natural cathedral grain
without masking it.
The real heart of this project is in the craftsmanship of the
details. The client wanted the top of the shelving to feature
vertical fluting and rosettes, mirroring the cherished
furniture from her childhood bedroom. Because I use solid
stick lumber and veneer core—and never a single piece of
particle board—I was able to integrate these delicate
architectural details while maintaining the structural integrity
needed for such a massive span. This 20-foot unit features a
fully finished tabletop and heavy-duty adjustable shelving,
providing a professional-grade display for a lifetime of books.
It’s a perfect example of how a custom cabinet maker can
turn a personal memory into a functional, durable reality.
Sometimes a project needs more than just a place to sit; it
needs to be an anchored part of the home. For this Red Oak
bookcase, I designed a 'semi-freestanding' system that
prioritizes rock-solid stability. I secured the wall-end directly
into the studs with eight hidden screws, then anchored the
base with twelve heavy-duty fasteners driven at a 45-degree
angle into the flooring.
To give it that clean, professional finish, I applied a 4-inch oak
base molding that hides all the structural hardware while
adding a classic decorative touch. Unlike mass-market
shelves that use flimsy pins, I built this unit with 3/4-inch
solid plank shelving. By fixed-mounting the shelves, I added
immense structural integrity and eliminated any chance of
bowing.
The back is just as impressive—a 3/4-inch solid wood oak
backing that I mechanically fastened to the vertical supports
for extra shear strength. Because I use solid stick lumber and
veneer core—and never a speck of particle board—this unit is
as attractive from the back as it is from the front. It’s built for
the person who wants their library to feel like a permanent,
unbreakable part of their architecture.
A retired professional couple in Jenkintown, PA came to my
shop with a lifetime’s worth of travel books and a specific
need for their new condo. They wanted the elegance of a
custom library but needed standalone pieces sized perfectly
for their wall dimensions. I built these three independent
units using solid Maple veneer core—the only way to ensure
these long-spanning shelves never sag under the weight of a
heavy collection.
To get that crisp, high-end look, I finished the Maple with
three coats of extra-white furniture-grade paint. These aren’t
'big box' shelves; I designed them with step-reveal fronts and
3/4-inch glossy tabletops for an architectural feel. Because
these are standalone units rather than floor-to-ceiling built-
ins, they offer a more budget-friendly price point without
sacrificing the solid stick lumber integrity I put into every
project. There isn't a square inch of particle board here—just
honest, durable cabinetry built to be as mobile as it is
beautiful.
A client in Penn Valley approached me with a challenge: he
needed a way to store and display a massive collection of
vintage record albums in a second-floor room with very tight
ceiling heights. I designed and built these twin Red Oak
record shelving cases to provide five tiers of 13" x 13"
openings—the perfect fit for a vinyl collection.
Because records are deceptively heavy, I didn't rely on flimsy
pins. I used solid 3/4-inch lumber core and deep-dadoed the
shelves into the center support posts to ensure they can
never drop or sag. To finish the look, I applied a rich mocha
wood stain followed by multiple clear protective coats to
withstand years of use.
I anchored the units securely to the wall studs with heavy-
duty fasteners to prevent any tipping, given the weight of the
collection. Topped off with a finished solid wood tabletop,
these units provide a rugged, permanent home for a priceless
collection. Like everything I build, there is zero particle board
here—just honest, solid stick lumber and veneer core
construction designed to last as long as the music.
