Custom Home Offices And Libraries

As seen in this picture are solid walnut lumber core French doors serving as the entry point to this beautiful walnut library. These doors were custom made in my cabinet making shop and according to the customer’s specifications. These French entry doors are constructed of solid 1 ¾” lumber core walnut with the raised panels being 1 3/8" thick solid walnut. The lever handles and hinges are finished in a flat black paint making them a beautiful match for the dark rich walnut grains. This entryway system is beautifully finished with solid walnut side pilaster moldings and hand crafted cabinet head headers. The rich protective satin lacquer finish concludes its furniture quality elegance granting these French entry doors a perfect passage into this custom walnut library.
This entry point to the library is showing to the far left a 45° angled walnut bookcase with adjustable shelving, continuous room base moldings, 3” fluted side pilaster moldings and finished off with continuous room 4 ¼” crown moldings. As you move to the right of the French doors I positioned a 20” wall bookcase with matching shelving, baseboard and crown moldings. To the right of the 20” bookcase is positioned a 45° angled solid walnut desktop consisting of 2 ½ inch wide walnut boards positioned random length. Now as you move up, there is a 45° angled triple walnut storage cabinet beautifully designed with walnut raised panel doors. Above is additional open faced storage which further enhances the beauty of this well-crafted walnut library.
As you start to move through the library you can appreciate the effort in design and function of the 45° angled desktops. The entire wall width is 171” which incorporates these wall to wall solid walnut desktops/counter top. As you can well imagine the counter top runs continuously under the centered five bay bookcases making it a well-crafted and elegant design for this rich walnut library. There are lots of legroom and for other items underneath of each desktop because of the massive 42” x 42” areas that they cover.
This elegant solid walnut secretary style cabinetry was creatively designed for its function and purpose. This floor to ceiling secretary unit has a robust width of 87” giving it maximum storage for hidden and show belongings. The left and right ends of this base cabinet consist of triple dovetail drawer banks with the bottom drawers serving for hanging files. The three centered walnut raised panel doors open to lots of storage with adjustable shelving. The 87” five bay open faced bookcases above carries the same characteristics of its other neighboring bookcases throughout the library. With its beautifully finished satin lacquer, fluted moldings and wide edge adjustable shelving making this secretary cabinetry the focal point of this beautifully well-crafted walnut library.
To the left in this picture you can see how the angled desktop matches its twin and ties into the centered extra wide 56” floor to ceiling bookcase evenly. This is because when the first design was drafted we decided to keep all bookcases the same depth at 10”. The 56” bookcase in the center boasts the same characteristics of its neighboring bookcases throughout this walnut library. In the far right bottom of this picture you will see a four drawer solid walnut drawer bank. The two bottom drawers are for hanging files and the remaining two top drawers are for extra hidden storage. The counter top which sits above is an exact match to the 45° angled desktops. Above is a solid walnut double door cabinet with adjustable shelving and open faced storage above. These walnut raised panel cabinets are an exact match to the cabinets above the angled desktops.
This picture will give you a good idea of the rustic back side of the French entry doors matching the rustic look in the flooring. The white narrow strips in the floor and the white portions in the French doors are known as “sap.” Notice how beautifully they blend and the floor is drawn up into the library, making the floor matching throughout even though the flooring is a different species of walnut and installed prior to the library installation. Also, please take notice of the beautifully crafted walnut window treatments along with the windows cabinet head moldings atop matching the French doors cabinet heads.
This picture gives you a good idea how easily the bookcases tie into the upper 45° angled raised panel door cabinetry. The 45° angled desktops fronts are finished off with a 1 ½” eased corner nosing matching the other desktops throughout the library. The cabinet door, door edging matches consistently throughout the desktop back wall molding and baseboard moldings. Please take notice that the flutes in the fluted moldings on the bookcases stops short of each end of the molding plank. This is done intentionally to add fingertips to the end of each flute and while leaving a flat base and crown at the ends of each fluted molding plank.
Beautiful and symmetrical solid walnut raised panel cabinetry with open faced cabinetry above. These well-crafted cabinet doors will serve well within arms reach seated at the desktop. The bottom edge of the upper cabinets is positioned 18” above the desktop leaving ample room for cabinet door operation while seated.
No library is complete without a matching ceiling medallion. This ceiling medallion is based on the Golden Rectangle which was calculated by the ceilings width and length. The doubled perimeter medallion wall extends down from the ceiling 7 ½” leaving ample room for the outer crown molding to be extended downward from the ceiling leaving a 2” gap for lighting. There will be unseen rope LED lighting tucked down in behind the crown molding allowing the light to illuminate the entire upper portion of this library. In the inner perimeter of the ceiling medallion is a double up molding touching the ceiling. This doubled up molding is an exact match to the windows and French door cabinet head moldings.
